Baylor Law Dominates State Moot Court Tournament

Baylor Law School teams nabbed first, second and fourth places at the Texas Administrative Law Moot Court Tournament held in Austin during the weekend.
The contest, which attracted 13 teams from law schools across Texas, resulted in two Baylor Law teams battling each other for first place in the championship round. The winning students were Jerry Hall and Linda Jegermanis, who narrowly defeated (by .7 of a point) the Baylor team of Matt Acosta and Jeff Watters.
Jerry Hall was named the top speaker in the final round. Matt Acosta and Jeff Watters also won the award for writing the second best brief in the competition.
The Baylor team of Matt Cole and Kimberly Connors finished in fourth place (they were eliminated by Acosta and Watters), and Kimberly Connors (3rd) and Matt Cole (4th) were also ranked in the top five overall speakers for the entire tournament. The team was coached by Adjunct Professor Kathy Serr and Professor Ron Beal.
Serr said the final round of the contest, which is sponsored by the State Bar of Texas administrative and public law section, was held at the court of appeals courtroom in Austin. The case argued by the students concerned the validity of rules managing shrimp fishing off the coast of Texas.
Judging the students were current court of appeals justices and a former justice. "They were extremely complimentary of our students," she said. "One justice said he had observed numerous contests over the years and the performances by our students were the best he had ever seen. He made the point that he did not give out praise lightly."
