Global Issues Lecture Series to Host Former German Ambassador

Dr. Hans Redlef Arnold, former head of the German Foreign Office and ambassador to the United Nations, will present a lecture titled "Europe and the United States: Where do we go from here?" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, in the Bennett Auditorium at Baylor University.

Arnold served as West German Ambassador to Holland and Italy from 1957-1961 and then led the Foreign Ministry from 1966-1968. From 1972-1977, he was head of the Directorate-General for Culture and then served as Chief Inspector from 1981-1982. A member of the German Foreign Service from 1951-1986, Arnold also served as Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations between 1982 and 1986.

Today, Arnold remains an active participant in German politics and is a lecturer at the Academy for Political Science in Munich. He also has written several books about German security and European unification.

Thursday's lecture is a part of the Global Issues Lecture Series, sponsored by Baylor's Center for International Education, the division of German and Russian and the department of political science. The Center for International Education "seeks to encourage the growth of tolerance, understanding, respect and compassion" among students by creating a variety of international opportunities for Baylor students.

The lecture is free and open to the public. In addition, Arnold will have a Q&A session at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, in the Beckham Room of the Bill Daniel Student Center.
