Wacoans Named Baylor Parents Of The Year

Dr. Ron and Betty Wilson of Waco were recognized as Baylor University's Parents of the Year for 2002 during Baylor's annual Parents Weekend Sept. 20-21. The couple was honored during the half-time ceremony of the Baylor vs. University of Tulsa football game.
"Dr. and Mrs. Wilson genuinely embody the motto of the Baylor Parents League --'parents helping parents,'" said Judy Maggard, director of parent programs. "In addition to being avid supporters of the university, the Wilsons are exceptional volunteers for the Parents League and are a rich source of information and help for other Baylor parents."
Current Baylor students are given the opportunity to nominate their parents for the Baylor Parents of the Year recognition. Nominations are received by the Parents League office, and parents are selected on the basis of their service and loyalty to Baylor University.
The Wilsons both graduated from Baylor -- Ron in 1971 and Betty in 1972. He graduated from the Baylor College of Medicine in 1974 and is a physician specializing in the field of nephrology, and she is a homemaker. They are the parents of two children - John, a Baylor senior majoring in engineering with a premed emphasis, and Jennifer Wilson Chakmakjian, a 1998 Baylor graduate. Jennifer's husband, Dr. Stephen Chakmakjian, graduated from Baylor in 1996.
Ron teaches at Baylor as an adjunct professor in the department of health, human performance and recreation and serves on the advisory council of the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition, Ron and Betty served two years as co-presidents of the Heart of Texas Parents League chapter. They are members of the Baylor University Development Council, Baylor Bear Foundation, Baylor Alumni Association and the Athletic Director's Club. Betty is a member of the Women's Athletic Cabinet and served on the Baylor Fling committee of the Baylor Alumni Association.
Ron serves on the staff of both Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center and Providence Health Center and is past president of the McLennan County Medical Education and Research Foundation. Betty is a member of the Waco Symphony Council and served as second vice president in charge of youth programs. They are members of First Baptist Church of Waco.
