Baylor Professor To Participate In Sept. 11 New York Event

Dr. Daniel McGee, professor of religion at Baylor University, will join approximately 100 religious leaders on Sept. 11 in New York City for a daylong event titled "A Tribute to Heroes: Past, Present and Future." The event is sponsored by the American Bible Society (ABS).
"I look forward to being a part of the event sponsored by the American Bible Society in New York on Sept. 11," McGee said. "It promises to be a time of reflection and learning when over 100 religious leaders from across American can meet to share their concerns, hopes and prayers for our nation and our world. My hope is that our witness of hope and reconciliation will counter the spirit of despair and vengeance that is prevalent in our time."
The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. (ET) Sept. 11 outside Bible House, the headquarters of the ABS. Dr. Eugene Habecker, president of the ABS, will read a tribute prayer. At 8:46 a.m. (ET) - the exact time when the first airplane crashed into the World Trade Center a year ago - participants will hold a silent prayer vigil.
After that moment of silence, the Young People's Chorus will perform Mozart's Rolling Requiem as part of a special international effort to mark Sept. 11. Choruses in various time zones will perform the piece, including choirs from Japan, Latvia, Portugal and Brazil, among other countries, and throughout the time zones in the United States. The performance at Bible House will be the only singing of the piece in New York City that day.
From 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. (ET), Bible Society employees will pray and read from the Scriptures at various sites around the city. Each gathering will be held at a site symbolic of
various aspects of the city's life, including the United Nations (New York as an international diplomatic capital); Battery Park (the lower Manhattan financial hub); Madison Square Garden (sports); Times Square (entertainment), and the offices of ABC and MTV (media).
The day's events will conclude at a luncheon at Bible House. Representatives of Bible Societies from Egypt and Jordan, clergy leaders, and representatives of Police Officers for Christ and Fire Fighters for Christ will be recognized. Speakers will include television personality Star Jones of ABC Television's "The View" and Lisa Jefferson, the telephone operator who was the last person to communicate with Todd Beamer, a passenger on the hijacked plan that crashed into the Pennsylvania woods on Sept. 11.
