Garrett Signs Book Contract With Kensington

Dr. Greg Garrett, associate professor of English at Baylor University, has signed a two-book contract with Kensington Books, publisher of Garrett's recent novel Free Bird. Garrett's next book, Cycling, will appear in September 2003. His third book, tentatively titled Sanctuary, will appear in 2004.
"It's really unprecedented these days for a publisher to sign up a novelist for multiple books, let alone buy a book that doesn't even exist yet," said Garrett, who also serves as director of Baylor's Art and Soul Festival. "But Kensington has been remarkably good to me since they bought Free Bird, and I continue to be glad we chose to sign with them."
Free Bird was published in March 2002 to considerable acclaim, including its selection by Publishers Weekly and the Denver Rocky Mountain News as one of the best first novels of the year. Kensington also chose the novel as its 2002 nominee for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Free Bird will appear in paperback in June 2003.
Garrett has taught at Baylor for 13 years. Winner of the William Faulkner Prize for Fiction, he is the author of 40 published short stories. He was named the Outstanding Baylor Faculty Member for 1994 by the Baylor Student Congress and received the university administration's outstanding professor award in 1996.
