School of Music to Present Pipe Organ Encounter June 11-17

The Baylor University School of Music and the Central Texas Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will present a week-long Pipe Organ Encounter beginning on Sunday, June 11, and continuing through Saturday, June 17.

Twenty-seven students, ages 12 through 18, will come to the Baylor campus from California, Louisiana, North Carolina and Texas to spend a week in intensive organ study. Some of the students will be pianists, being introduced to the organ for the first time. Daily classes will cover church service playing, organ registration, pedal technique and improvisation, and there will be daily organ lessons and evening recitals.

Many of the performances are free of charge and open to the public, including two events on Sunday, June 11--a 4 p.m. recital by John Blackburn in Truett Seminary's Powell Chapel, and a 7:30 p.m. recital by Aaron García and Brent Stamey in Roxy Grove Hall. On Monday, June 12, Stephen Morris will present a 7:30 p.m. recital in Powell Chapel, and on Tuesday, June 13, Joyce Jones will perform a 7:30 p.m. recital in Roxy Grove Hall.

Each of the final two public events will take place in Roxy Grove Hall--a presentation, with organ accompaniment, of the silent movie The Phantom of the Opera at 8:15 p.m. on Wed., June 14, and a 10 a.m. student recital on Saturday, June 17.
