Baylor University's Louise Herrington School of Nursing honored retiring dean Phyllis Karns at a reception in Dallas May 3.
Baylor President Emeritus Herbert H. Reynolds, who was the university's president when Karns joined the nursing faculty in 1987, spoke of Karns' contributions during her 15 years as dean of the School of Nursing.
Also speaking were Baylor Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Dianna Vitanza, newly-appointed acting dean Judy Wright Lott, and Ramey Tolentino, Baylor University Medical Center's vice president of nursing administration. Karns' son, Rob Karns, an associate minister of music at Castle Hills Baptist Church in San Antonio, played his own rendition of "Amazing Grace" on the saxophone at the event.
Lott will serve as acting dean, effective June 15. Karns will retire on June 30.
