Texas Historical Markers to be Unveiled at Browning Day April 20

April 13, 2006

Baylor University will unveil two Texas historical markers in front of Armstrong Browning Library during Browning Day, a celebration of the birthdays of English poets Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning and former Baylor English department chair Dr. A.J. Armstrong. Browning Day will begin with a lecture by Dr. Joe Phelan of DeMontfort University in Leicester, England, at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in the Hankamer Treasure Room at the library.
Phelan graduated from King's College Cambridge, and obtained his master's degree and doctorate at King's College London. He is co-editor of The Poems of Browning, vols. 3, 4 and 5.
Following Phelan's presentation, the library will unveil the markers. One plaque will commemorate the dedication of Dr. A.J. Armstrong and his wife, Mary Maxwell Armstrong, to the development of the library and the acquisition of original resource materials of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The second plaque honors the Armstrong Browning materials as the world's largest collection of books, manuscripts and artworks related to the Victorian poets.
A reception will be held in the Cox Reception Hall following the marker ceremony. The event is free and open to the public.
