Vanderbilt Professor To Speak On Shakespeare April 16

Dr. R. Chris Hassel Jr., professor of English at Vanderbilt University, will deliver the Reesing Endowed Lecture at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in room 101 at the Carroll Science Building on the Baylor University campus. Hassel's lecture, "Shakespeare and the Word," is free and open to the public.
Hassel, who received his doctorate from Emory University, has conducted extensive research on Shakespeare's tragedies, as well as explored the relationship between Shakespeare and theology.
He is the author of Songs of Death: Performance, Interpretation, and the Text of Richard III, Faith and Folly in Shakespeare's Romantic Comedies and Renaissance Drama and the English Church Year. Articles written by Hassel include "Fluellen: Wars of Discipline and 'Disciplines of the War'" in Literature and Theology, "Mouse and Mousetrap in Hamlet" in Shakespeare Jahrbuch and "Shakespeare's Removed Mysteries" in Connotations. Additionally, Hassel has presented scholarly papers at the Shakespeare World Conference and the Shakespeare Association of America annual meeting.
The lecture, which is sponsored by Baylor's English department, will be followed by a reception and refreshments in the Carroll Science building foyer.
