Baylor's University For Young People Accepting Applications
Baylor University's Center for Community Learning and Enrichment is accepting applications for its summer program University for Young People (UYP). UYP is a summer commuter program offered to students who are entering first grade through twelfth grade.
Now in its 22nd year of operation, UYP provides summer enrichment for gifted and talented students in the area. Last year, about 200 students participated in UYP. Mary Witte, director of the UYP, is excited about this opportunity for students in the area. Her own children have attended the program and benefited greatly from it.
"The purpose of UYP is for students to have experiences and opportunities to explore their interests and make some decisions about their future," Witte explained.
The applications are available on the website of the Center for Community Learning at www.baylor.edu/soe/ccle. Once a student has been accepted to the program once, their application status is valid through high school graduation.
First through third grade students will all participate in a creative problem solving experience related to structures and the building of a new city. These courses will take place at the Hillcrest Professional Development School from June 12-16 each day from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Fourth graders will have the option, based on the discretion of their parents and teachers, to either join the younger students at Hillcrest or the older students on Baylor's campus, where the fifth through twelfth graders will meet. The sessions for the fourth- through 12th- grade group are two weeks in length and are offered from June 5-16 and then from June 19-30.
Due to Project Promise, the city of Waco has provided a grant so that 70 students from Waco I.S.D. will be able to participate in the UYP (up to two courses) without cost.
Courses covering varied subject matter will be offered to cater to the diversified interests of the students involved. Some of the 2005 classes that were available included: Poetry with Personality!, Learning by Growing, Chess I, Digital Photo Studio, Outdoor Adventures and French: C'est la Vie! Classes in music, math, drama and art were also offered. A similar assortment will be offered this year, and the course listings will be available on the website sometime in May. The older bracket of students can take part in up to three courses per session, and the cost depends upon the courses selected.
