Faculty, Students To Share Latest Research Jan. 30

Faculty and students will discuss their latest scholarly activity during Baylor University's annual Scholars' Day Wednesday, Jan. 30. Presentations will run every hour from 8 to 11 a.m. and from 2 to 4 p.m. with most sessions taking place in the Bill Daniel Student Center.
"The 160 presentations scheduled for Scholars' Day at Baylor are far above the previous high of 105 presentations. I think the increase reflects our growing emphasis on scholarship as Baylor moves toward the goals of Baylor 2012, the university's 10-year vision," said Dr. Larry Lyon, dean of the Graduate School and professor of sociology.
This year's event includes presentations from a wide-range of academic disciplines, such as physical therapy, biology, sociology, religion, music and nursing. Presentation topics include "Assessing the Social and Economic Impact of Riverboat Gaming," "Medical-Ethical Decision-Making in the Era of Managed Care," "Texas Perspectives on Women as Senior Pastors" and "Business Ethics in the 21st Century," to name a few.
At noon the Scholars' luncheon, which is only open to presenters, will begin in the Barfield Drawing Room. Guest speaker will be Dr. David M. Lodge, professor of biological sciences at the University of Notre Dame and Teaching Fellow of The Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies.
Lodge earned his doctorate in ecology from Oxford University and his bachelor's degree in biology from the University of the South and joined the Notre Dame faculty in 1985. An ecologist, his primary research examines the ways that human activities change freshwater ecosystems. He has published more than 60 articles in books and academic journals.
Now in its ninth year, Scholars' Day is an annual event that is sponsored by the Graduate School and is free and open to the public.
