January 20, 2006

Dr. Kristian Klefstad, lecturer in piano at Baylor University, will present a faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, in Roxy Grove Hall. Klefstad, who holds degrees from Millikin University, the University of Missouri-Kansas City and The University of Texas at Austin, has been a member of the Baylor School of Music faculty since August of 2003.
His program, "Music of North and South American Modern Composers," will open with the Wasatch Suite, written in 2004 by U.S. composer Bryan Stanley of Salt Lake City, Utah. Its four descriptive movements are "Silver Lake," "Sun Dance," "Aspens" and "Sunrise at Mount Timpanogos."
Next, he will play two works by Frederick Rzewski--namely, Down by the Riverside (1979) and "IV" from Four Pieces for Piano (1977). Also to be heard will be two movements -- "Ninni" and "Stewart" -- from Jason Bahr's 1999 composition, Character Suite. Bahr teaches at Mississippi State University.
Following intermission, Klefstad will play the six-movement Mosaico de aires nativos by Ecuadoran composer Luis Salgado. It was written between the years 1945 and 1956.
The program will conclude with a major piano work by Argentinian composer, Alberto Ginastera. His rhythmically charged Piano Sonata No. 1, Op. 22, dates from the year 1950.
Kristian Klefstad's piano teachers have been Gregory Allen, Richard Cass and Aldo Mancinelli, and he has participated in the master classes of such notable artists as Claude Frank, Emmanuel Ax, André Watts, and John Corigliano.
