Baylor Hosts Annual Martin Luther King Luncheon Jan. 18
Baylor University's office of human services, School of Education, department of educational administration and division of continuing education will host the annual Martin Luther King luncheon in honor of the late civil rights leader from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, in Barfield Drawing Room in the Bill Daniel Student Center.
The guest speaker for the event is Erma Johnson-Hadley, vice chancellor of Tarrant County Community College. In 1981, Hadley-Johnson became the first woman and first African American vice chancellor at the college and was named vice chancellor for administration in 1991. She oversees a district of 25,000 students in credit programs and 35,000 non-credit students, a workforce of 2,700 and an annual budget of $141.7 million.
Hadley-Johnson is a graduate of Prairie View A&M University, where she is a Distinguished Alumna, and earned her master's degree in business education from Bowling Green State University. She has studied at the University of Texas and has completed postgraduate work at the University of North Texas. In addition, she holds an honorary doctorate from Paul Quinn College.
Extensively involved in the civic and business communities in North Texas for more than 30 years, Hadley-Johnson is a member of several boards, including J.P. Morgan Chase Bank, Fort Worth; Paul Quinn College; Tarrant County Hospital District; Fort Worth Metropolitan Black Chamber of Commerce; and Fort Worth CAN! Academy. She served nine years on the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Board, where she was the first woman and first African American elected chair of the board. She also is chair of the board of trustees at her church.
Hadley-Johnson is a founding member and a past president of the Texas Association of Black Personnel in Higher Education. She also is immediate past president of The Links Inc., and is one of the leaders of delegations to South Africa, where the organization has built and dedicated 10 schools in the impoverished areas of that country.
