Law Students Donate Toys, Enjoy 'Immunity Day'

Helping the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program brought Baylor law students a welcome relief from the ordeal of being called upon in class by their professors.

Thursday, Dec. 15, was designated "Immunity Day" at Baylor Law School. By donating toys to the campaign, the students had their names added to lists of those who would not be called upon during class sessions.

Encouraged by such a worthwhile cause, the students, along with faculty and staff members, pitched in and donated toys and cash totaling more than $6,000 to the Toys for Tots Program. The donated toys, which filled five large boxes, were picked up Thursday by members of the Marine Corps Reserve at the Sheila and Walter Umphrey Law Center. Many students were on hand to assist the Marines as they loaded the toys into their seven-ton military truck.

"Immunity Day" has been enjoyed for more than a decade at Baylor Law School and is a joint Toys for Tots project of the Student Bar Association (SBA) and members of the law faculty and staff.

Law Dean Brad Toben said "Baylor Law students are so generous with their time and resources. The Toys for Tots Program is one of several charitable projects sponsored by the SBA and by our other student organizations each year. Our students know that we are part of a helping profession and they demonstrate that understanding in these projects in which they participate to reach out to disadvantaged groups. My colleagues and I are so proud of them."
