Steppin' Out Service Day to Utilize Grant Money

Baylor University's biannual day of service, Steppin' Out, will take place Sunday, Nov. 6, with the assistance of resources awarded by State Farm Insurance.
Last spring Baylor received the Good Neighbor Citizenship Award for outstanding work in the community. The award included a grant of $5,000 to help purchase new tools and supplies for Steppin' Out events held during the 2005-2006 academic year. The upcoming day of service will be the first event to utilize funds from the grant.
The grant funds have been used to provide supplies, such as paintbrushes, rollers, ladders and shovels to several groups of student volunteers and for the promotion of the event. In addition to student volunteers, State Farm representatives will work at a worksite at 3120 Old Marlin Rd. in Waco.
Baylor has sponsored the Steppin' Out program for 20 years. This semester approximately 2,500 students will be involved in the event, a growth in participation from last fall by nearly 1,000 volunteers.
From 1 to 5 p.m., students will work at approximately 30 job sites around the city of Waco. The mission of the Steppin' Out service project is to enhance both student involvement in community service and in community awareness and interaction and collaboration between Baylor and the Waco community. Steppin' Out seeks to provide opportunities for experiential learning, civic leadership and social responsibility.
Steppin' Out is also supported by the Baylor/Waco Foundation, which awarded the program $10,000 that will be available for the next calendar year. Sherwin-Williams donates paint each year and will provide enough this semester to paint 20 houses and one motel.
