Sacred Harp Sing Scheduled For Oct. 20

Baylor University will host a Sacred Harp Sing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Gov. Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village. A singing school for novice singers will be held at 9 a.m.
"Sacred Harp singing is easy to learn and all are welcome," said Dr. Gayle Avant, professor of political science and organizer of the event.
Reminiscent of early American singing schools, Sacred Harp singing is a community musical and social event that emphasizes participation, not performance. Participants take turns leading the group, selecting the song and beating time on the hand. The singing is not accompanied by harps or any other instrument.
The group sings from "The Sacred Harp," a songbook first published in 1844. The repertory includes psalm tunes, odes and anthems by the first American composers and folk songs and revival hymns. Saturday's participants will use the 1991 edition of the songbook.
