Baylor University student leaders will distribute navy blue ribbons across campus this week to honor and remember those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C.
Baylor students gave out ribbons to students, faculty and staff who attended the prayer and remembrance service Sept. 12 in Waco Hall. They also will distribute ribbons at Thursday’s blood drive from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the student lounge of the Umphrey Law Center on University Parks Drive.
Ribbons also will be available in the SUB from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or in the student government office on the first floor of the Bill Daniel Student Center.
Since the tragedy occurred, Baylor students have gathered by the hundreds at various locations across campus, praying for those whose lives have been affected by the attacks.
“This has been a life-changing last two days,” said student body external vice president Jennifer Terrell.
The senior from Blue Springs, Mo., said the initial idea of distributing ribbons came from a Baylor student congress member. An e-mail from Nebraska’s student body president indicated a similar effort was under way at that institution.
“We talked about ways of uniting the student body during this time of national tragedy,” Terrell said. “Then after the e-mail from Nebraska, Baylor [and other universities around the nation] decided to make these ribbons available to everyone on our campus.”
In addition to the ribbon memorial, many more students will provide assistance by rolling up their sleeves Thursday to give blood or by supporting relief efforts through the American Red Cross.
Baylor’s Golden Key National Honor Society is accepting donations for the Red Cross at box locations in the student activities office and the McLane Student Life Center.
“Some students have said we are unable to donate blood, but we want to help,” Terrell said. “They heard about the wonderful services provided by the Red Cross so Golden Key has teamed up with this organization.”
