Jan Karon, the author of the best-selling Mitford series of books, has canceled her Oct. 18 visit to Baylor University, as well as all appearances in Texas, due to the tragic events Sept. 11 in New York and Washington, D.C.
Karon had been scheduled as the inaugural speaker in the Distinguished Author Lecture Series, benefiting the Baylor Libraries. There is a possibility that Karon will reschedule her Baylor appearance in the spring, said Bill Hair, acting dean of libraries.
Ernest Gaines, the author of such well-known fiction works as The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and A Lesson Before Dying, is the next scheduled speaker in the library lecture series. Gaines will visit Baylor in October 2002.
The Baylor ticket office in the Bill Daniel Student Center will handle reimbursement for all tickets purchased in advance for the Karon lecture. Proceeds from tickets not redeemed by Oct. 30 will support the Library Book Endowment Fund.
