Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble in Dual Concert Sept. 26

Two of the Baylor University's major instrumental groups will perform a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, in Jones Concert Hall, located within the Glennis McCrary Music Building. The Symphonic Band will be conducted by Barry Kraus, associate director of bands, and the Wind Ensemble will be led by Kevin Sedatole, director of bands.
The Symphonic Band will present the first half of the concert, opening with Gustav Holst's First Suite for Military Band. Composed in 1909, the work is in three movements: "Chaconne," "Intermezzo" and "March."
American composer Frank Ticheli will conduct the Symphonic Band in two of his own pieces. Joy Revisited, written earlier this year, is a work of "simple, unabashed joy," inspired in the hours of the birth of Ticheli's first child. Composed in the wake of the tragic shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., An American Elegy is dedicated to the memory of those who died, and in honor of the survivors.
The Symphonic Band also will perform Paul Hindemith's masterpiece from 1943, Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber, which celebrates the life and compositions of the famed German romantic composer.
The Wind Ensemble's portion of the concert will begin with an arrangement by Yo Gotoh of "March Hongroise" from Hector Berlioz's dramatic legend, La Damnation de Faust.
Then, Associate Professor of Horn Jeffrey Powers will be the soloist in a performance of Daniel Godfrey's Shindig from 2002, which the composer describes as "something akin to a big barn dance." Godfrey serves on the faculty of Syracuse University.
The program will conclude with two more works by Frank Ticheli, Shenandoah from 1998 (with the composer conducting) and then his Symphony No. 2 from 2004.
