School of Social Work to Focus on Suffering and Hope at Workshop

Suffering and hope will be the focus for a one-day workshop geared toward social work professionals and students. The eighth annual Preston M. Dyer Workshop, sponsored by Baylor's School of Social Work, will take place from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at Region 12 Education Service Center in Waco.
The workshop will feature a keynote address by Dr. W.A. Achenbaum, professor of history and social work at the University of Houston. He will speak on "Suffering and Spirituality in Adulthood."
The workshop will have two sessions in which social workers may earn ethics continuing education credits. "Suffering and Hope: Ethical Issues in the Delivery of Care" will feature Dr. Michael Attas, cardiologist and associate director of medical humanities at Baylor; Dr. Lauren Barron, family medicine physician and Chief of Medical Staff at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center; and Helen Harris, senior lecturer in the School of Social Work.
The other ethics session, "Ethical Responses to Sexual Violence in the Congressional Context," will be conducted by David Davis, program director for counseling and sexual assault crisis services at the Advocacy Center for Crimes Victims and Children.
There also will be five breakout sessions on various topics that center around the theme of the workshop. Participants will select two breakouts to attend.
