Art Exhibit to Feature Works of Two Baylor Professors

Two Baylor professors are exhibiting their artwork in the Martin Museum of Art from Sept. 2 through Oct. 8. Susan Dunkerley, assistant professor of art, and Karl Umlauf, Artist-In-Residence, are presenting new work inspired by their most recent sabbaticals.
Dunkerleyâ??s installation contains 34 still life photographs, ranging from silver gelatin prints on paper, to large Polaroid prints, to a dozen pieces that are photographic images on thick panels of colored and etched glass and are suspended from the ceiling. In addition, two steel sculpture pieces, â??Ladderâ?' and â??Vanishing Point,â?' incorporate the image-laden panels of stained glass.
The exhibition by Umlauf consists of 28 paintings and drawings, most of which are large acrylic and mixed media pieces featuring highly textured surfaces. The work covers a period of 18 months, including his sabbatical leave. Umlauf says much of his inspiration came from the five weeks he spent in Spain visiting the medieval cities of San Sebastian, Barcelona and Madrid. Other work reflects the time he spent in Canyon de Chelly, near the Fours Corners region of Santa Fe, N.M.
An opening reception for the exhibitions will be held on Friday, Sept. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. The Martin Museum of Art is located in the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts Building. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 12 to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free.
