Gary Baxter To Receive Bobby Jones Award Oct. 27

The Baylor "B" Association, formerly the Baylor Letterman's Association, will present the Bobby Jones award to Baylor alumnus Gary Baxter during halftime of the Baylor-Texas Tech Homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 27. Baylor "B" Association president Walter F. (Pinkie) Palmer will present the award.
Baxter, the most valuable player in last year's Homecoming game, was an All-Big 12 defensive back for Baylor. A native of Tyler where he starred for John Tyler High School, Baxter was a letter winner every year that he was at Baylor and played in all 11 games in the 1999 and 2000 seasons. This past spring, he was a second-round draft choice of the Baltimore Ravens.
The Bobby Jones Award is given to an outstanding senior player from the previous year for leadership on and off the field during the week preceding the Homecoming game. The Baylor coaching staff chooses the recipient.
The award serves as a memorial for Jones, the Baylor quarterback who led the Bears to defeat the University of Tennessee in the 1957 Sugar Bowl. His widow, Rosemary Jones, established the award after he died in 1965 in automobile-train wreck while a member of the Tennessee coaching staff.
