A veteran Texas Baptist Student Ministries leader has joined Baylor University's George W. Truett Theological Seminary as director of student services.

Grear Howard comes to Truett Seminary from Texas Tech University, where he had served as director of Baptist Student Ministries since 1993. His career with college student ministries began in 1979 when he directed the Baptist Student Unions at McLennan Community College and Texas State Technical College for three years. From 1982-87, he was associate director of Baylor's BSU, then served from 1987-93 as a Bible teacher and director of the BSU at East Texas State University, now Texas A&M-Commerce.

At Truett Seminary, Howard will be responsible for recruitment and admissions, as well as financial aid and student life.

"Grear comes to Truett Seminary with great experience in student relations," said René Maciel, assistant dean for administration and academic services. "As director of student services, he will do an outstanding job working and interacting with our students in several areas from recruiting to student life. We're excited about him being a part of the Truett Seminary community."

Born in Sante Fe, N.M., Howard grew up in Dallas and graduated from Richardson High School. A 1979 graduate of Texas Tech, he also earned his master of divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1979 and doctor of ministry degree from Golden Gate Theological Seminary in San Francisco in 1999.

"I love working with students, and I appreciate the opportunity to take my vocation in a new direction at Truett Seminary," Howard said. "I'm really impressed with the caring atmosphere here and how serious Truett is about theological education as we strive to become the premier theological seminary in the world. I look forward to getting to know everyone and helping our students become effective ministers."

Howard and his wife, Stacy, have two sons, Blake, a sophomore at Texas A&M, and Taylor, a sophomore at Lorena High School.
