Baylor University students will take part in First Step, a mass community service project, on Saturday, Aug. 18. The event is sponsored by Baylor, the Brook Oaks Neighborhood Association, the City of Waco, Keep Waco Beautiful and Sherwin Williams Paint Co.
From 9 a.m. to noon, more than 1,000 incoming freshmen, transfer students and Welcome Week staff members will work in the Brook Oaks neighborhood, located between 10th and 14th streets at cross streets of Morrow Avenue to West Avenue. Students will spruce up 14 homes with paint and a general clean-up of the neighborhood.
Students will meet at 8 a.m. in front of the Bill Daniel Student Center where buses will take them to their work areas. They will return to the student center at noon for lunch and a celebration of service.
First Step also introduces students to Steppin' Out, a Baylor tradition in which more than 2,500 students with various organizations and groups set aside one Saturday a semester to assist with various service projects in the Waco community.
