Former Attorney General Janet Reno To Speak At Baylor Sept. 13
Former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno will speak on ethics in public service, as well as share some reflections on the 1993 Branch Davidian standoff near Waco, during her visit to Baylor University on Thursday, Sept. 13, as part of the President's Forum lecture series.
Reno's speech will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Ferrell Center on University Parks Drive. Ticket information will be released in August.
The nation's first female attorney general and the longest serving attorney general since before the Civil War, Reno headed the world's largest justice and law enforcement office (125,000 employees) for nearly eight years. During her tenure, she enforced civil rights, environment and health statutes and oversaw a reduction in conventional crime rates throughout the country. She also increased the government's information technology resources devoted to law enforcement in cyberspace.
Born in South Florida, Reno graduated from Coral Gables High School, Cornell University and Harvard Law School. Prior to her appointment as attorney general, she served for 15 years as the state attorney for Dade County. Reno lives at the family home that her mother built in South Florida and travels around the country in her red truck. She continues to be involved with the issues important to her, including dispute resolution, advocacy for children and the elderly, and problem solving in law enforcement.
The purpose of the Baylor President's Forum is to bring to campus nationally and internationally recognized leaders who promote dialogue about, and greater understanding of, important issues facing our nation and world. The audience is composed of students, faculty and staff, and members of the Central Texas community.
A group of Baylor student leaders also will meet with Reno during an afternoon question-and-answer session, as they have with past President's Forum Lecturers Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former Republican presidential candidate Steve Forbes and panelists from The McLaughlin Group.
