Baylor Women's Basketball, Jeremy Wariner Nominated for ESPY Awards

Baylor's national champion women's basketball team and Olympic gold medalist Jeremy Wariner were among the nominees released Friday for the 13th Annual ESPY Awards, which will be announced on July 13 and shown on ESPN on July 17 at 8 p.m.
The Lady Bears are one of five nominees in the "Best Team" category, and the only women's team nominated, competing against the World Series champion Boston Red Sox, Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, NBA champion San Antonio Spurs and the NCAA football champion USC Trojans. The Lady Bears went 33-3 for the season, defeating three number one seeds en route to their first NCAA title and will look to join the 1996 UConn women's basketball team as the only collegiate teams to capture the award.
"It is an honor for the Lady Bears to be one of five nominees for an ESPY in the best team category," head coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson said. "It is a tribute to Baylor University and the accomplishments of the women's basketball program to be included among such elite teams and also to be the only women's team nominated."
Wariner is one of three nominees in the Best Male Olympic Performance category, going up against swimmer Michael Phelps and wrestler Cael Sanderson. Wariner completed an unprecedented sweep by taking the indoor and outdoor NCAA 400-meter titles, then following up with gold at the U.S. Olympic Trials and led the U.S. to a 1-2-3 sweep in Athens, Greece. Wariner also ran on the U.S. gold-medal 4x400-meter relay to add to his indoor and outdoor NCAA relay titles.
