Baylor University's groundbreaking HDTV production A Most Significant Journey has won a 2001 Silver Telly Award in the Non-Broadcast Film/Video Productions category. The Silver is the highest award given in the competition, which was established in 1980.
The Telly has become one of the most sought-after awards in the TV, commercial and video industry. The Telly statuette has appeared on the sets of many prime-time TV shows, including thirtysomething; Murder, She Wrote; Newhart; News Radio; and most recently in the movie What Women Want. In the past 21 years, winners and finalists have come from a large cross-section of agencies, production companies, television stations, and cable operations, as well as corporate video departments. All 50 states have been represented by past winners and finalists.
Baylor is believed to the first university in the country to produce a high definition promotional video. The 38-minute production was produced and directed by Baylor alumnus Fred W. Miller of Austin. Dallas-based HD VISION Inc., a leading producer of HDTV programming, handled the imaging and post production for Journey.
Following its November 1999 premiere at Baylor Homecoming, Journey embarked on a 12-city national tour, playing to thousands of Baylor alumni, parents, prospective students and other friends of the university in leading historic theaters and performance halls from Washington, D.C., to Los Angeles. Using state-of-the-art BARCO DLP projectors, the video was shown in most venues on a custom-made, 18-feet by 32-feet cinema-size screen. Several HDTV-capable television stations around the country also aired the production on their digital channels.
Not only did audiences see a display of the very latest in imaging technology, more importantly Baylor's story was showcased using the best of what the university has to offer in the creative talents of its own people. Of the more than 120 individuals who worked on the project, all but 13 were Baylor graduates, students, faculty or staff.
Other honors garnered by Journey include a Gold Award in the Public Relations category at the 2000 Houston International Film Festival and an Aurora Award in the Public Relations category at the 2000 Aurora Film and Video Competition in Salt Lake City, Utah. Both awards were the top honors in their categories.
