Thomas L. Harken, founder and CEO of major restaurant chain Casa Ole, will speak at Baylor University during chapel services at 10 and 11 a.m. Monday, April 18, in Waco Hall.
Harken was born in Lakeview, Mich., and as a child contracted a debilitating illness that forced him to drop out of school. He then went to work at his father's grocery store and joined the United States Air Force several years later.
After learning to read at a late age, Harken has become passionate in the fight against illiteracy. He graduated from high school in 1992 and earned his diploma 32 years late. He now owns two restaurant chains, a real estate business, and wrote an autobiography titled "The Millionaire's Secret." Harken opened the first Casa Ole in 1979 and owns 12 Casa Ole and Crazy Joe restaurants in Texas.
