Lawyers, GEAR UP Waco Students To Participate In Enrichment Program
Attorneys with the Waco-McLennan County Young Lawyers Association (WMCYLA) and about 40 Waco middle school students and their parents will participate in LAWYER or "Local Attorneys and Waco Youth Enrichment Roundup," that will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at several locations on the Baylor University campus.
The students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades will learn about the legal profession, use the computer-based WebQuest to solve a legal puzzle created specifically for them, and plan and participate in a civil and criminal trial at Baylor Law School. Parents also will attend the sessions, as well as learn more themselves about legal aid, juvenile law and small claims.
Morning sessions will be held in the Draper Academic Building with the afternoon trial sessions in room 110 of the law school.
The Texas Young Lawyers Association is funding the LAWYER enrichment program through a grant written by WMCYLA president Alfred Mackenzie and Dr. Mary Witte of Baylor's Center for Community Learning and Enrichment.
Participating students are already involved in GEAR UP Waco, a comprehensive, collaborative initiative focused on preparing at-risk students academically and socially for college. GEAR UP Waco is funded by a $6 million federal grant from the Department of Education and includes such partners as Baylor University, Texas State Technical College, McLennan Community College, Communities in Schools/McLennan County Youth Collaboration, Waco I.S.D., Waco Foundation and the City of Waco.
