Race brochures for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Central Texas Race for the Cure, which will take place April 28 from Heritage Square in downtown Waco through the Baylor campus, will be delivered to all Baylor students, faculty and staff within the next few days.

Registration forms for teams and individual runners also can be downloaded from

The pre-registration fee for the 5K race and a one-mile "Fun Walk/Run" for people of all ages and athletic abilities is $16 before April 20, $18 from April 21-27 and $25 on race day. Runners can have their race timed for an additional $2. T-shirts for supporters, or "phantom runners," are $16.

The one-mile walk/run begins at 8:15 a.m. April 28, with the 5K beginning at 8:45 a.m. Race day events include a Kiwanis pancake breakfast, a visit from popular book and television show character Arthur, a live performance from singer/songwriter Angie Paris who will premier her newest release "I Want to Live," a survivors' ceremony, an awards presentation and drawings for door prizes.

Baylor is serving as the local host sponsor for the race, which is the largest 5K run in the nation with more than one million entries each year. Local organizers have set a goal of 5,000 entries, which would make the Komen race the largest race ever held in Central Texas. Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds from the race will remain in Central Texas to fund local breast cancer projects.

"The Central Texas Race for the Cure is not just a walk or run, but a family event to honor and celebrate the lives of those affected by breast cancer," said race co-chair Jeff Browne.

The race also is an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of breast cancer screening. "It is projected that more than 192,000 women and 1,500 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year," said race co-chair Vivian Stidvent. "This is a disease that touches everyone in some way."
