Baylor's Hogg Announces Retirement

Baylor head women's basketball coach Sonja Hogg, one of the most successful coaches in the sport's history, announced her retirement Monday, effective at the end of the 1999-2000 season.
"I've coached an awful lot of basketball in my life," said Hogg, "and I just feel that it's time for me to put my energy and drive in another direction.
"I love Baylor University and I love Waco, Texas. This community has been wonderful to me. I've just lost the desire to be on a plane every other day during recruiting and during the season. I still have a lot of enthusiasm and energy. My life needs another direction and new challenges right now."
Hogg took over a program that had averaged eight wins a year in the nine seasons preceding her arrival in 1994. In her first five full seasons in Waco, Hogg's Lady Bears averaged 15 wins, hosted the 1998 WNIT championship game and increased average home attendance by 500 percent.
"This is a sad day for Baylor women's basketball because we have lost one of the true pioneers in the profession," said Athletics Director Tom Stanton. "I respect and support Sonja's decision. She feels this is what's best for her.
"There are a lot of numbers that demonstrate what Sonja has done for this university, but those numbers don't tell the whole story. One thing is obvious, however: Sonja has built a solid foundation that we hope to build upon in the years ahead. For that, we will be eternally grateful."
Hogg has accepted a position to remain at Baylor in the university's development office. She held a similar position at the University of Texas from 1988-90.
Hogg began her coaching career at Louisiana Tech, where she led the Lady Techsters to six-straight Final Four appearances, including consecutive national championships in 1981 and 1982. With a career record of 389-143, the Alexandria, La.-native currently stands 11 wins shy of career win No. 400. Hogg has posted an 82-88 record in six years at Baylor.
