Johnston Named Acting Chair Of HHPR Department

Dr. Donald D. Schmeltekopf, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Baylor
University, has announced the appointment of Dr. Deborah L. Johnston as acting chair of the department of health, human performance and recreation in the School of Education.
The appointment of Johnston, an assistant professor of health, human performance and recreation, is effective immediately. A search committee has been formed to find a successor to Dr. Robert C. Cloud, who is returning to full-time teaching in educational administration.
A 1977 graduate of Northwest Missouri State University, Johnston earned her master of science degree from Baylor and her doctorate, both in exercise physiology, from the University of Arkansas in 1988.
Prior to joining the Baylor faculty in 1987, Johnston taught at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kan., from 1977 to 1980 where she was a lecturer in health and physical education. From 1980 to 1984 she was a graduate teaching assistant and lecturer for Baylor in health and physical education. She then worked as a graduate teaching assistant in health and physical education at the University of Arkansas until 1987. During her first year back at Baylor, she served as director of the Baylor University Wellness Program.
Johnston is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the Texas American College of Sports Medicine, the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education and Recreation & Dance and the Texas Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation & Dance.
She has published several articles in such publications as the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research and the Journal of Human Movement Studies.
Johnston also has several research projects in progress including one on the effects of creatine on the performance of the college football athletes.
