Flute Teacher To Perform In Faculty Recital March 21

Helen Ann Shanley, associate professor of flute at Baylor University, will present a faculty recital at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, in Roxy Grove Hall. She will be assisted by faculty members Douglas Claybrook (piano), Bruce Berg (violin), Kathryn Steely (viola), Gary Hardie (cello) and harpist Delaine Fedson.
The recital will open with Naiades, a fantasy-sonata for flute and harp by English composer William Alwyn. Dating from 1972, it is one of the most substantial works ever written for this particular combination of instruments.
Odelette, a very late work by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns will follow. It was written originally for solo flute and orchestra when Saint-Saëns was 85 years old.
Pantomime, a piece by the late Richard Willis, is scored for flute and string trio. Willis, emeritus professor of music composition and Composer-in-Residence, served on the Baylor faculty for 32 years and retired in 1996. He was the recipient of many notable awards, including the Prix de Rome.
The final piece will be the four-movement Flute Sonata by Verne Reynolds. Reynolds is a former hornist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. He served for 36 years as professor of horn at the Eastman School of Music.
Shanley has been a member of the Baylor music faculty since 1969. She holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at El Paso and a master's degree from North Texas State University.
