Social Work Celebrates 30th Anniversary With Open House March 17

Baylor University's School of Social Work will host an open house Friday of its new offices in the Speight Avenue Plaza Building, 1521 S. Fourth St. on campus. The open house, part of the School's 30th anniversary celebration, will run from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The public is invited and refreshments will be served.
"This will be chance for us to showcase our new facility, of which we are very proud," said Dr. Preston Dyer, chair of the School of Social Work. "We invite everyone to come tour our new home, meet our faculty and to see displays on various aspects of the program as well as a display about the history of social work education at Baylor."
Baylor started its first full-fledged social work program in 1969 with the creation of the division of social work in the department of sociology and anthropology. In January 1999, the division was designated the School of Social Work, which serves as an umbrella for the undergraduate and graduate programs, the Center for Family and Community Ministries and the Institute of Gerontological Studies. Eighty-five students currently have declared social work as their undergraduate major, and 22 students are enrolled in the graduate program.
"Social work is a growth field," Dyer said. "In fact, U.S. News & World Report has identified social work among the 20 best jobs in its annual career guide."
The School also will sponsor the annual Preston Dyer Spring Workshop from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 16, at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, 1624 Wooded Acres. This year's topic will focus on the ethical integration of spirituality and social work practice. Keynote speaker will be Dr. Dennis T. Haynes, professor and director of graduate social work education at the University of Texas.
