November 30, 1999

Two senior NATO officials -- Cmdr. Werner Schmitt of the German Navy and Maj. Jean-Marie De Blende of the Belgian Air Force -- will deliver a briefing about NATO at 2 p.m. Friday in room 337 in the Draper Academic Building on the Baylor University campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.
"The two officials will give a 30- to 40-minute orientation on NATO and then will answer questions from the audience. I anticipate a lot of discussion about Kosovo," said Dr. William Mitchell, professor of political science and director of Middle East Studies program.
Other topics that will be included in the presentation are NATO's new strategy for managing peace and dealing with crisis; the Bosnia mission and the future of the stabilization force; NATO's relationship with Russia; and the working relationship with other security organizations.
The visit to Baylor is in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of NATO. The NATO briefing team also will speak at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 7 p.m. Friday.
