Model U.N. High School Teams to Compete Nov. 6

High school students from around the state will gather at Baylor University on Saturday, Nov. 6, to compete in the sixth annual Model United Nations Tournament. Committee meetings will take place in various classrooms in the Draper Academic Building. The award ceremony will begin at approximately 4:15 p.m. on the fifth floor of the Cashion Academic Building.
The competition recreates a meeting of the United Nations. The students, representing delegations from member countries of the U.N., will debate a variety of topics, such as environmental concerns, human rights and international security. Competitors must thoroughly research their chosen country and take its position. More than 400 students representing 54 countries will participate in this year's tournament.
Individual awards based on speaking ability, knowledge of the representative country and cooperation with other delegates will be given. The team with the highest number of individual awards will be selected the outstanding delegation. Members of Baylor's award-winning Model U.N. team will serve as judges for the competition.
"The competition is an excellent educational tool," said Dr. Linda Adams, associate professor of political science and director of the Baylor Model U.N. program. "Participating on a Model U.N. team helps students with their writing and speaking skills and builds self confidence."
