Baylor to Host Two Debate Workshops

WACO, Texas -- Baylor University will host two debate workshops on June 20-July 2 and July 18-30 which will feature the Policy Debate Workshop, the Lincoln Douglas Debate Workshop and the Teachers' Workshop.
The Policy Debate Workshop will focus on analysis and research of a topic, as well as the knowledge and use of various debate techniques and theories. This workshop will include intensive practice sessions, lectures given by debate theorists and personal interaction between students and workshop leaders.
The Lincoln Douglas Debate Workshop will feature value debate strategy and techniques, persuasion and public speaking skills and instruction in philosophy. This workshop is open to high school students of all levels of ability. Participants will receive positions with evidence and analysis on various values and philosophical approaches.
Baylor also provides teachers and debate coaches with assistance and information in building and maintaining a forensics program. Teachers who attend the Teachers' Workshop will receive lesson plans, lecture discussion guides, handouts and homework assignments and numerous other instructional materials. They also will also receive policy materials to help prepare their squads for current debate topics. This workshop offers college credit in a graduate level course and advanced training to beginning and veteran teachers and coaches.
Dr. Karla Leeper, director of forensics and the Glenn R. Capp Professor of Forensics at Baylor, will direct the Baylor Debaters' Workshop. Many of the nation's top debate coaches will join the Baylor staff to help teach and facilitate these workshops. Students are placed in groups based on their level of experience. While students are not in sessions, they will have the opportunity to participate in activities such as swimming, tennis, the workshop dance and the workshop picnic.
The cost of the workshop is $425, which includes all costs and lab fees, but it does not include the cost of individual photocopying. For students who choose to stay overnight, the cost of meals and lodging on the Baylor campus is $450, making their total cost $875.
