Strecker Museum Children's Classes Scheduled for Summer Months

Children ages 2-16 can learn about a variety of topics, from plants and bugs to archeology, during Strecker Museum's summer programs. Three one-week sessions will be held on June 14-18, June 21-25 and June 22-July 2 at the Ollie Mae Moen Discovery Center and the Gov. Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village. Additionally, there will be one-week classes for children 2 and 3 years old and in fourth, fifth and sixth grade.
"Babies and Beasties" and "Barnyard Buddies" will introduce 2-3 year olds to the natural world, while "Wonders" and "Let's Explore," for 4 and 5 year olds, will focus on a wide range of subjects.
Children entering first grade can explore what children of different cultures do for fun in "Kid's Stuff." Second graders will discover the world of plants during "Plants and Kids," and third graders will spend the week learning about invertebrates in "Bug Crossing."
"Blast Off," the program for children entering fourth grade, will focus on flight. Fifth graders will perform experiments in the areas of optics, chemistry and physics in "Bubble, Bubble, Gak and Goo." Sixth graders can learn the ins and outs of the media in "Stop the Presses." This class includes field trips to a TV station and radio station.
"Huckleberry Summer" will teach children about summer activities from the late 1800s. The class will meet July 12-16 at the Gov. Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village. "Grandmother Taught Us How," a new week-long camp that runs from Aug. 2-6, will introduce children to the craft skills that women had in the 19th century. Finally, children ages 8-11 can learn how to be environmentally friendly at Waco-Eco Camp, sponsored by the city of Waco, Keep Waco Beautiful and the Ollie Mae Moen Discovery Center. The camp, which runs from July 26-30, will feature daily field trips to Cameron Park, Lake Waco Dam, the gravel pit, the mammoth site and the landfill.
Classes range in cost from $25 for "Babies and Beasties" to $90 for "Huckleberry Summer" and "Grandmother Taught Us How." For registration information, call the Ollie Mae Moen Discovery Center at 757-0922.
