Baylor's student-run radio station KWBU 107.1 FM will celebrate its 33rd birthday with a free music festival featuring several national, regional and local bands on Saturday, March 20, from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Fountain Mall on the Baylor campus.
Bands scheduled to play include national acts Starflyer 59 (California), Doosu (Dallas), and The Graduates (Dallas). Also performing will be Waco bands Coaching Pele, The Upstarts, and One Track Mind; Drawn Blank from Houston; Austin-based Astroblast; and Riot Squad from Dallas.
"It has been my dream since I started at KWBU in 1996 to put on a music festival for Baylor and Waco," said program director Michael McGuff, a Houston senior. "It's a way to thank our listeners for being there for 33 years."
KWBU began broadcasting on March 15, 1966, the year the FCC authorized its call letters. Today, KWBU serves as a laboratory for aspiring broadcasters on the Baylor campus. Located in Castellaw Communications Center, KWBU plays a variety of music programming, ranging from alternative, punk, ska, urban and electronic to classical, jazz and contemporary/alternative Christian. Broadcast students also work in news and sports divisions, providing morning and afternoon news updates, sports updates in the afternoons, and live coverage of Baylor Bear football, women's basketball and home baseball games. In 1998, under McGuff, the station moved into the digital age, running its public service announcements on a computer system and broadcasting its signal live on the World Wide Web through Real Audio.
