Baylor Libraries Receive Foundation Grant

Baylor University's libraries will receive a $30,000 grant from the Schumacher Foundation of Dover, Mass., to purchase children's and teacher education books that are needed by elementary and secondary education majors. The grant will be given to the university in three installments. The first installment of $10,000 was received by the libraries this month, with subsequent installments to arrive in December of 1999 and 2000.
Materials purchased with the grant will help prepare "teachers who are competent in the classroom and who can instill in children the value of lifelong reading and learning," said Dr. Avery Sharp, dean of libraries.
The Schumacher Foundation was founded by the late Frederick W. Schumacher, who immigrated to Waco as a child. Born in 1863, Schumacher moved to Waco when he was nine and attended Baylor for two or three years. He helped found Behrens Wholesale Drug Co. before marrying and moving to Columbus, Ohio. He became wealthy while in the mining business in the town of Schumacher, Ontario.
The Schumacher Foundation provides charitable donations for educational, cultural and religious purposes in communities that were important to Schumacher: the village on the Isle of Fehmarn on the Baltic Sea where he was born; Columbus, Ohio; Schumacher, Ontario; and Waco.
