Professor to Speak on Intercultural Understanding

October 5, 1998

Dr. Ute Lahaie, assistant professor of German at Baylor University, will speak as part of the Council for International Education's lecture series "All the News That's Fit to Discuss" at
4 p.m. Thursday in the Cowden Room, on the third floor of the Bill Daniel Student Center.
Lahaie's speech, "A Global Approach to Intercultural Understanding," will address the need for increased multicultural education so that native-born Americans and immigrants can better relate to each other.
"Understanding and education are needed in order to break down cultural barriers and stereotypes," Lahaie said.
Lahaie believes that students should take foreign language courses in order to understand cultural differences because the economy is becoming increasingly global. She plans to address the difference between encountering foreigners at home and in other countries.
"When you deal with foreigners abroad, it is by choice, so people react differently than they do with foreigners in their own country," Lahaie said.
Lahaie moved to the United States from Germany four years ago and is in her third year of teaching at Baylor.
