Jazz Ensembles Play on October 6

Baylor University's two jazz ensembles will present a joint concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, in Jones Concert Hall. Both ensembles perform under the direction of Benjamin Irom, lecturer in jazz studies.
Jazz Ensemble II will open the program with Sammy Nestico's arrangement of "Robbin's Nest" by Sir Charles Thompson and Illinois Jacquet, followed by Bill Holman's setting of the Ned Washington/Victor Young standard, "Stella by Starlight."
Closing out Jazz Ensemble II's portion of the concert will be the John Fedchock arrangement of Don Grolnick's "Pools," "Walkin' About" by Thad Jones, Frank Mantooth's arrangement of "Nica's Dream" by Horace Silver, and Sammy Nestico's "Hay Burner."
After intermission, Jazz Ensemble I will take the stage to perform the Thad Jones setting of Jerome Richardson's "Groove Merchant," an arrangement by Gil Evans of Jelly Roll Morton's "King Porter Stomp," Bob Mintzer's "The Heart of the Matter" and Gerry Mulligan's "Young Blood."
The final half of Jazz Ensemble I's set will consist of John Coltrane's "Central Park West," Mark Taylor's "Granada Smoothie," Bret Zvacek's arrangement of "81" by Miles Davis and Ron Carter, and the Rayburn Wright setting of Juan Tizol's "Perdido."
Jazz Ensembles I and II each include nearly 20 of Baylor's finest student jazz musicians.
