Armstrong Browning Library To Celebrate Browning Day

April 4, 2005

by Nancy Pederson

Browning Day, a celebration of the birthdays of English poets Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning and former Baylor University English department chair Dr. A.J. Armstrong, will be held from 2:30-4:30 p.m., April 22, in the Hankamer Treasure Room of Armstrong Browning Library. The program is free and open to the public.
Principal speakers are Dr. Dianna Vitanza, associate professor of English at Baylor, and Dr. Simon Haines, head of the School of Humanities at the Australian National University.
Vitanza will discuss the Joseph Milsand Archive, an extensive collection of papers, journals and letters belonging to the French literary critic Joseph Milsand, who was one of Robert Browning's closest friends during the last 20 years of his life. The library recently obtained the valuable archive, which, once researched, could make the present biographies of Robert Browning inadequate.
Haines, an expert on 19th-century literature, will speak on the relationship between Tennyson, Browning and Milsand.
Included on the program is a brief musical interlude by Tricia Filippi, a graduate student formerly of Baylor's music school. Following the program, a reception will be held in the Cox Reception Hall, and those attending will have the opportunity to view the Milsand collection.
