Regents Set 1999-2000 Tuition and Fees, Approve Seminary Design
Baylor University's Board of Regents set tuition and fees for the 1999-2000 academic year and approved an architectural design for the new George W. Truett Theological Seminary campus during its September meeting today.
Tuition will rise to $329 per semester hour next year, a 6.8 percent increase over the current rate of $308 per semester hour. Charges for room and board will increase by 7.3 percent and 2.9 percent, respectively.
President Robert B. Sloan Jr. told regents that Baylor is committed to maintaining its affordability while ensuring that it continues to meet the educational needs of current and future students.
"Baylor continues to be ranked as one of the best values in American higher education because of our quality programs and our relatively low tuition," Sloan said. "But we also must ensure that we have adequate resources to meet our goal of becoming one of the nation's truly great universities."
The Seminary design approved by the regents features a 53,000-square-foot complex that includes a 550-seat chapel; a Great Hall; a 100-foot by 100-foot landscaped, enclosed courtyard; classrooms and meeting rooms; and faculty and administrative offices. The building will be a concrete structure with Baylor red brick and white precast or cut stone trim. The facility will be built at the corner of M.L. Cooper Drive and Dutton Avenue on the site of the old Kirk Wilson Elementary School.
Baylor regent emeritus John Baugh and his family announced a $5 million lead gift for the Seminary campus last November. Fund-raising is under way to secure the remaining $5 million needed to complete Phase I of the complex.
