Cherry Award Winner to Deliver Lecture Sept. 22

Dr. Robert H. Bell, co-recipient of the Baylor University's 1998 Cherry Award for Great Teachers, will lecture on "Shakespeare's Humorous Heroes" at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, in Room 101 in the Carroll Science Building on the Baylor campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Bell, who serves as director of the Project for Effective Teaching and as the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of English, has been a member of the faculty at Williams College in Massachusetts since 1972. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Bell graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College and earned his master's degree and doctorate from Harvard University.
With expertise ranging from the works of Shakespeare and John Milton to those of James Joyce and 18th-century literature, Bell is a frequent presenter at academic conferences and has served as editor-in-chief of the Berkshire Review and as a reader for Cornell University Press, Columbia University Press and the University of Florida Press.
The author of Jocoserious Joyce: The Fate of Folly in Ulysses, he has written numerous articles for academic publications including the Milton Quarterly, Thalia, American Scholar and Literature Film Quarterly.
In 1989, Bell was awarded the national Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for College Teachers, and in 1994 he was named Exemplary Teacher by the American Association of Higher Education.
