Baylor to Host Economic Workshops for Teachers

Two economic education workshops--one for high school teachers, the other for elementary educators--will be held at Baylor University Thursday and Friday, July 9-10.
Both workshops, which are free, are sponsored by Baylor's Center for Private Enterprise and the Texas Council on Economic Education. The programs will be held at the Cashion Building located at the Hankamer School of Business from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Coffee and rolls will be provided in the morning, and lunch will be provided at noon. To encourage attendance, a $50 stipend will also be provided to participants.
The program for high school teachers is scheduled for Thursday and the primary emphasis will be on economic history topics, based on the National Council on Economic Education's publication "Eyes on the Economy," a copy of which will be provided to each attendee. Instructors will include economics lecturers Heather Newsome and Tom Odegaard of Baylor's Center for Private Enterprise, and Dr. Warren Matthews, director of the Center for Economic Education at Houston Baptist University.
The workshop for elementary educators, slated for Friday, will focus on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) requirement. Curriculum units with links to the TEKS will be provided and discussed. Preliminary topics include curriculum units in economics and children's literature. Activities and games useful in teaching these concepts will also be provided. Workshop instructors will include Newsome, Odegaard, and Phyllis Gilbert of the Center for Economic Education at Stephen F. Austin State University.
