Baylor to Host Two Music Technology Workshops

Baylor University's School of Music will host the 4th annual Music Technology Workshops June 23-26 and June 30-July 3.

The workshops will discuss the use of Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) software and techniques. According to Michael Jacobson, workshop conductor and associate professor of saxophone and music technology, MIDI allows musicians to hook their electronic musical instruments up to a computer so that the user may make notations on the computer rather than write out the notes by hand. MIDI also allows users to record and playback music.

Both sessions will be held in Baylor's META lab, which is a 12-station MIDI facility on the third floor of the Moody Library.

Session 1 of the workshop, titled "Survey of Notation Software: Which One's Best for You?" discusses how MIDI instruments communicate and how to set them up. Use of music software packages such as "MusicTime," "Overture," "Finale" and "Nightingale" will be covered.

The second session, titled "MIDI for the Classroom Teacher," also will discuss how the instruments communicate and how to set them up. Additionally, participants will learn how to operate synthesizers, sound modules, drum machines and sequencers. This session will cover performance oriented programs such as "Band-in-a-Box," multimedia packages like various CD ROM products and equipment necessary for audio playback, amplification and visual aid projection.

Enrollment is open to adults only. Space is limited to 12 persons per session.
