Gov. Ann Richards, Waco High Grad to Receive Service Awards
The Baylor University Alumni Association will award former Gov. Ann Richards the Price Daniel Distinguished Public Service Award at 9:30 a.m. Saturday during the university's spring commencement.
The Alumni Association also will award Dr. Mauriece Vance Johnston the George W. Truett Distinguished Church Service Award during the 9:30 a.m. commencement.
Richards served as Texas governor from 1990-94. Between 1976 and 1990, she served two terms as state treasurer and a term as Travis County Commissioner. She also delivered the keynote address at the 1988 Democratic National Convention. Richards graduated from Baylor and Waco High School.
Johnston, also a graduate of Baylor and Waco High, has held a number of leadership positions within the Baptist denomination. She served as first vice president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas in 1994 and as co-chair of Texas Baptist Committed in 1995. Johnston served two terms as president of the Woman's Missionary Union and held numerous committee assignments. She is a resident of San Antonio and an active member of the First Baptist Church of San Antonio.
Price Daniel was a Baylor graduate and served as governor of Texas, and George W. Truett served as a long-time pastor of the First Baptist Church of Dallas and was a major supporter of Baylor.
