Series Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Carillon

April 22, 1998

by Richard Veit

The McLane Carillon Tenth Anniversary Recital Series will be inaugurated Sunday with a performance by carillonneur Carol Jickling Lens of Houston. Her recital will begin at
7 p.m. in the Pat Neff Hall Tower on the campus of Baylor University.
Lens, who has studied at the University of Michigan and at the Netherlands Carillon School in Amersfoort, currently serves as carillonneur of the Bell Tower Center Carillon in Houston. She has performed throughout the United States and Europe, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America (GCNA).
Her program will include arrangements for carillon of Edward MacDowell's Woodland Sketches, the Bagatelle for Carillon and St. Anne Partita by John Knox, Leyenda by Isaac Albéniz, and Dmitri Shostakovich's The Second Waltz. She also will play six of the Fourteen Carillon Preludes on Appalachian White Spirituals by Ronald Barnes (1936-1997), who died in November and to whom this recital is dedicated.
A gift of the Drayton McLane family and the McLane Co. Inc. of Temple, the McLane Carillon debuted 10 years ago, on Nov. 4, 1988, during Baylor's Homecoming festivities. This splendid instrument is one of fewer than 200 carillons on the entire North American continent with a range of four octaves or more.
Future programs in the McLane Carillon Tenth Anniversary Recital Series will be presented each month (except August) through Nov. 6. Performers will include Lynnette Geary, Baylor carillonneur Herbert Colvin, Judson Maynard, George Gregory and Loyd Lott.
The recital by Lens is free and open to the public. Weather permitting, listeners are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets, and printed programs will be distributed on Founders Mall in front of Pat Neff Hall.
