Strecker Museum Children's Classes Scheduled for June, July

Children ages 2-16 can learn about a variety of topics, from plants and bugs to archeology, during Strecker Museum's summer programs. Four one-week sessions will be held on June 8-12, June 15-19, June 22-26 and July 27-31 at the Ollie Mae Moen Discovery Center, Strecker Museum and the Gov. Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village.
"Babies and Beasties and Barnyard Buddies" will introduce 2-3 year olds to the natural world, while "Wonders" and "Let's Explore," for 4 and 5 year olds, will focus on a wide range of subjects.
Children entering first grade can explore what children of different cultures do for fun in "Kid's Stuff." Second graders will discover the world of plants during "Plants and Kids," and third graders will spend the week learning about invertebrates in "Bug Crossing."
"Blast Off," the program for children entering fourth grade, will focus on flight. Fifth graders will perform experiments in the areas of optics, chemistry and physics in "Bubble, Bubble, Gak and Goo." Sixth graders can learn the ins and outs of the media in "Stop the Presses." This class includes field trips to a TV station and radio station.
"Huckleberry Summer," a new program for 8-10 year olds, will teach children about summer activities from the late 1800s. The class will meet July 27-31 at the Gov. Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village.
Finally, children ages 12-16 can learn proper archaeological field techniques and conduct careful laboratory examinations in "Field Archaeology." This class, which meets from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 8-12, will show participants how to lay out a grid, properly excavate artifacts, map the site and record data. Students should bring a sack lunch but drinks and refreshments will be provided. This class will meet at Strecker Museum.
Registration for the summer classes begins May 2 at the Ollie Mae Moen Discovery Center. Classes range in cost from $35 for "Babies and Beasties" to $75 for "Field Archeology.
